creative concern

I want to focus on graffiti that is written on washroom stalls, specifically ones that invites conversation or those that are "political". Often these are known as "washroom politics". The idea for this creative project occurred to me when I remember how fascinated I was with a particular stall in the girl's washroom in the basement of UBC Point Grey Campus' Student Union Building, where a lot of political issues were written (along with other random graffiti). As a result, I will focus on finding examples of bathroom graffiti on the UBC Point Grey Campus.

What I want to do with my project is to bring these "washroom politics" into the digital space. I plan to take pictures of graffiti-ed washroom stalls and share it on the world wide web. I want to create a digital narrative by creating hyperlinks on these picture. I feel that this will enhance the reading of "washroom politics". In addition, this type of narrative will not only be a visually stimulating, but it also brings the two spheres of physical reality and digital reality together.

In addition, I will also try to:
  1. Explain what exactly is "washroom politics" and why/when people choose to commit this act
  2. Determine the authorship of washroom politics
  3. Provide explanations of the advantage and disadvantages of transferring "washroom graffiti" into the digital space
  4. Analyze how a person's reading of graffiti changes depending on where and when they read it (private vs public spaces)
  5. Provide a blog that would record down my thought processes as I begin and end this project
